Our products are made of...
Excipient
Excipients are aqueous or greasy substances. They make up the largest part (in quantity) of a cosmetic product. Water, fats, waxes, oils and fatty alcohols are constituents, as are surfactants in the case of cleansing products such as shampoo. This crucial part of the composition explains why the excipient (or base) plays a fundamental rôle in the quality of a cosmetic product. Indeed, it is the excipient which enables the skin’s hydrolipidic film to be maintained or restored, hence the advantage of using vegetable fats and oils whose properties are much superior to mineral oils.
Active ingredients
Active ingredients (active substances or active bases) are beauty care substances in cosmetic products. Vitamins, moisturisers such as vegetable glycerine are active ingredients as well as many vegetable extracts (Aloe Vera, Camomile, seaweed, etc.). Therefore, the active ingredient is not the only important part of the composition.
Our active ingredients
Essential oils
A substance extracted from volatile liquids secreted by aromatic plants.
The essences are produced in the special glands of different parts of the plant (flower, leaf, wood, etc.), always in very small quantities. Therefore, the cost of extracting these essential oils is very high. For example, in order to obtain 1 kg of essential rose oil, almost 10 tons of petals need to be processed. Essential oils are made up of a complex mix of molecules. We know how to separate those which are useful to us by various procedures (chromatography, distillation and solvent extraction).
Our essential oils : Pink Grapefruit, organic Sweet Orange, organic Bitter Orange, and organic Rosewood.
Vegetable oils
The label “certified organic” or “100% organic:” these vegetable oils which carry this label must come from farming production which does not use synthetic chemical products and whose cultivation is located in zones protected from outside contamination. Vegetable oil is extracted from the seed or the oleaginous fruit and is obtained by cold-pressing. The juice is then filtered and processed. Vegetable oils used in Câlinesse products are all certified organic.

Hydrolate or floral water
These two terms generally designate the same product, but “floral water” is the name which is really used for hydrolates obtained from flowers as its name would indicate.

Organic Cultivation
Organic farming is a cultivation method founded on the principles of keeping to and respecting the laws of nature, which consists of fertilising plants not with soluble fertilisers, but with the living organisms in the soil which create and provide plants with everything they require (C. Aubert, Organic Farming, Paris, Le Courrier du Livre Publishing, 1970).
We select our plant extracts from the Swiss company Alpaflor.
